Our Services

Wellness and Rehabilitation Services works closely with both internal and External partners. Within the University, Wellness and Rehabilitation Services with the directorate of students Affairs through the student leadership KUSA to promote the welfare and wellness of students in the University in areas of:

1. Campaign against alcohol and drug abuse
2. Prevention of HIV and AIDS
3. Campaigns against other addictions eg Gambling

Wellness and Rehabilitation Services also works with students clubs like, Amazing minds, Peer counselors, Red cross and KUSACO

It also works closely with the Directorate of Health Services where we receive referrals from and we also refer some of our clients at the health unit to seek the services of the psychiatrist base at the health unit.

We also work closely with Ghana 4 Unit where our students and staff receive Wellness services which include, HIV Testing and counseling, Reproductive health and Family planning.

Wellness and Rehabilitation Services also works with Accommodation Directorate where by student with issues that require counseling are referred to us.

During the 3rd Quarter, from January – March 2019, Wellness and Rehabilitation Services made several major achievements all which targeted to provide wellness services and provide intervention measures to life threatening issues to both staff and students in the University.

1. On 7th and 9th February, 2019 trained 75Trained Trainers (TOTs) on Alcohol and drug abuse, prevention of HIV and AIDS and counseling.The knowledge gained will help them and also apply to be peer educator to their colleagues face by those challenges
2. Form 11th – 15th March 2019, organized for Wellness week, in partnership with: KUSA, National Aids Control Council (NACC), Ruaraka Sub county . Aids Health Foundation and University Management. All these partners gave their support in providing Wellness Services which include: campaigns against alcohol and drug abuse, HIV Testing , counseling and connecting those affected care, reproductive health checks.
3. On 5th and 6th February visited Mombasa Campus to sensitize both staff and student on Alcohol and drug abuse, HIV prevention and care and also Wellness services were provided which include: blood pressure checks, blood sugar test, HIV Testing and counseling
4. On 14th February extended the wellness services to the staff at the New Administration Block, The activity was very successful as a total of 106 staff received the wellness health checks.
5. On 7th March 2019, the University signed a 2 year project on Mental Health and Wellbeing with Basic needs basic rights Kenya and the activities of the project will be implemented by the Directorate of Wellness and Rehabilitation Services
6. On 22nd of March 2019 Wellness and Rehabilitation Services conducted a very successful Wellness Training for staff proceeding in retirement in 2019. The DVC Administration gave the opening remarks and advised the retirees at length. A total of 50 retirees attended the training which was very informative and helped in preparing them for retirement
7. During the said quarter the counselors at the Directorate were able o attend to 75 cases of counseling which include the following: psychological, drug related, academic related, relationships and suicidal ideation.
8. The Directorate was able to sensitize a total 1,767 students on, alcohol and drug abuse, through real life experience sharing, talks and presentations.
9. Sensitized a total of 4,592 students on condom use and disposal through various activities like demonstrations facilitated by the King of condom who visited KU on 22rd February2019 and other activities

PROGRAMS UNDER WELLNESS AND REHABILITATION SERVICES

1. Promotion of Mental Health Wellness
   Sensitize students and staff on promotion of wellbeing which includes psychological, physical, social and spiritual wellness. Topics taught include stress management, nutrition and non- communicable diseases.
   
   
2. Promote HIV /AIDS prevention
   This is accomplished through HIV testing and counseling, conducting sensitization activities on behavior change, condom sourcing and distribution, sensitizing on condom use and disposal, sensitizing on reducing stigma and discrimination and finally sensitizing on adherence to treatment. 
   
   
3. Psychological Counseling
   Provide psychological counseling to both staff and students to help them navigate through whatever challenge/opportunity they could be facing.
   
   
4. Implement Alcohol and Drug Abuse (ADA) Prevention work place policy
   This is done by creating awareness on classification of substances, their effects, prevention and treatment. Where necessary, referral to rehabilitation centre’s is also done and after care carried out.
   
   
5. Debriefing
   The Directorate offers debriefing services to the staff working at the funeral home. Debriefing services are also given to students and staff when they loose a loved one. 
   
   
6. Offer Retirement support
   This entails conducting seminars for staff due for retirement. This prepares them for life ahead.

The KUHC primarily provides health services to Kenyatta University staff and students.

It is composed of the following sub-units: The Outpatient Clinic, the Sick Bay and Ghana Complex Clinics consisting of Reproductive Health Clinic (Ghana 2), HIV Voluntary Counseling and Testing and Treatment Centre (Ghana 4), Consultants Clinics (Ghana 6) and the Dental Unit (Ghana 8). The outpatient clinic is composed of the reception, consulting rooms, the pharmacy, laboratory, and physiotherapy unit.

Sick Bay has a capacity of 18 beds divided into Male wing consisting of 8 beds Male Wing and 10 beds Female Wing. This provides observation and treatment facilities for the more ill patients requiring inpatient care.

The KUHC outpatient clinic and sickbay are open 24 hours, seven days a week.

The Ghana Complex Clinics provide a wide array of auxiliary and specialized health services. The Reproductive Health Clinic (Ghana 2) provides antenatal and postnatal health services to students and staff including breast and cervical cancer screening and contraceptive services. The HIV Voluntary Counseling and Testing and Treatment Centre (Ghana 4) conducts HIV testing and initiates treatment and follow-up for HIV infected persons, The Consultants Clinics (Ghana 6) is a specialist referral clinic that operates an appointment schedule for 5 specialist doctors targeting patients with complex conditions in the fields of internal medicine, gynaecology, ear, nose and throat surgery, paediatrics and psychiatry. The Dental Unit (Ghana 8) performs dental and oral health procedures and follow-up.

The KUHC has a fleet of two ambulances used for emergency response and transfers to secondary facilities as per need.
